Students Show Creativity, Innovation Through
Design Projects
At the University of Colorado at Boulder, engineering students have the opportunity to
apply the concepts they learn in the classroom to hands-on projects with
real-world applications. Students from all engineering majors enjoy the
teamwork, problem-solving, and hands-on design that accompany projects
course opportunities from the freshman to the senior year. Projects often focus on
creating innovative solutions to real-world problems, and students follow a process
that mirrors the way engineers work in industry. At the end of each
semester students showcase their projects to the community at the ITL
Design Expo.
"Freshman and senior projects were the highlights of my college career.
Those two classes allowed me to see what a real engineering career would
entail. ... I believe both of these classes are a very important part of
the curriculum at CU.”
— Jamie Clark,
2007 mechanical engineering graduate

First Year
Engineering Projects
Challenged to develop
appropriate technological systems for the developing world,
first-year engineering students created the Compactable Briquette
Press to generate fuel from available materials such as discarded
paper and sawdust.
The press is filled
with a mash of burnable materials which are compressed into small
bricks. Once dried, these bricks can be burned for fuel. The
press is easy to assemble and take apart for convenient storage
and transport.

Senior Design
Projects
The People's
Choice Award at the Spring 2008 Engineering Design Expo went to
a mechanical engineering capstone design team that designed a
rotational putter pendulum that emulates the putter stroke of a
skilled player. Seniors Ryan Margoles, Matt Howard, Jordan
Brooks, Mike Messimer and Nick Delashmutt said the year-long
project for Phoenix-based Ping Golf was both fun and gratifying.
"I've learned
more this year than in all my other years combined," says
Margoles, who was team leader for the project.
