College Overview
Welcome to CU Engineering!
The College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU-Boulder is one of the top-ranked undergraduate
and graduate engineering programs in the country, offering a strong
technical curriculum and a broad range of other educational opportunities.
Our national reputation and commitment to excellence has attracted
a distinguished faculty with a strong interest in both teaching and
research. The faculty has led the nation in introducing active learning
experiences that enrich students' education and help to meet the
needs of the community.
For example:
- The Integrated Teaching and
Learning Laboratory has provided hands-on design experience
to undergraduate students in its unique, award-winning facility
since 1997. The ITL Laboratory, with its open-air plazas, team
meeting rooms, and "building as a learning tool" systems was
described in a Hewlett-Packard publication as one of the "finer
teaching environments on the planet."
*The ITL
program won a
major national award for innovation in engineering education in
2008 recognizing the ITL program's positive impact on learning.
- The college's
First-Year
Engineering Projects Course, offered since 1994, allows
students to put engineering theory into practice early in their
undergraduate career. Students work together on developing
projects such as assistive technology for people with disabilities
and interactive exhibits for museums and schools.

examples of projects
created by first-year students as well as capstone projects
developed by senior engineering students.
- Engineering
for Developing Communities is an educational, research and
outreach program where students focus on developing and implementing
sustainable technology for developing communities around the world.
Launched at CU-Boulder in 2001, the program spun off the non-profit
organization Engineers Without Borders, which now has 235 university
and professional chapters working on 250 sustainable engineering
projects in 48 countries around the world.

- The Discovery Learning Center is a high-tech
research and learning laboratory that supports a college-wide initiative integrating undergraduates
into the research enterprise. The center's 12 advanced laboratories
conduct research in fields ranging from biotechnology to unmanned
vehicle systems, incorporating undergraduates, graduate students,
faculty and industry partners in collaborative research teams.
- The college
also is a leader in K-12
Engineering Outreach, pioneering new engineering
programs for students and teachers at the elementary, middle and
high school levels, and hosting the national K-12 Digital Library
of Science and Engineering, which is significantly expanding curricular
materials available to teachers.
