Christopher Bowman was appointed associate dean for research in the College of Engineering and Applied Science starting August 2007. He holds the James and Catherine Patten Endowed Chair and previously served as chair of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering from 2003 to 2007. He also has a joint appointment at the CU School of Dentistry. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 1988 and 1991, respectively, and began his academic career at the University of Colorado in January 1992 as an assistant professor. Since that time Professor Bowman has built a program focused on the fundamentals and applications of cross-linked polymers formed via photopolymerization reactions. In the broad areas of the fundamentals of polymerization reaction engineering, polymer chemistry, cross-linked polymers, photopolymerizations and biomaterials, he has published more than140 papers and been recognized with numerous awards. These awards include the American Chemical Society's Division of Polymeric Materials Science and Engineering Cooperative Research Award, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' R. H. Wilhelm and Allan P. Colburn Awards, the Society for Biomaterials Clemson University Award for Contributions to Literature, the American Society of Engineering Education's Curtis W. McGraw Award, and the Materials Research Society's Outstanding Young Investigator Award. He was also recognized by the CU Technology Transfer Office as Physical Sciences Inventor of the Year in 2003. Professor Bowman once served as AIChE's national meeting vice-chair, served for three years as the ACS Division of Polymer Chemistry Program co-chair, and for the last four years served as the co-director of the NSF Industry/University Cooperative Research Center for Fundamentals and Applications of Photopolymerizations. |
