Clough Selected as Faculty Rep to Athletics Many CU engineering alumni will remember chemical engineering Professor David Clough, whose support of and commitment to students is almost legendary in engineering. These days, Clough is also well known in the CU Athletics Department, where he serves as faculty athletics representative for the campus. He was appointed to the position by the chancellor in March 2005. As faculty athletics rep, he monitors and evaluates the academic performance of more than 300 student athletes, represents CU to the Big 12 and NCAA, and assists with staff hiring. He was a member of the leadership team that brought in CU's new football coach, Dan Hawkins. Clough says he seeks to "know, advise, and encourage" CU's student athletes in the same way that he does the students in his own department. He also works to encourage and improve relationships between athletics and the rest of the Boulder campus, in particular, the faculty. He notes, however, that "in engineering, we have nothing that rivals the regulatory system of the NCAA, with nearly 500 pages of regulations in the NCAA Division I Manual, augmented by some 9,000 interpretations on file. That has been a real eye-opener and has shown me the necessity for an effective compliance effort at the university." In addition to being a valued teacher, Clough is also a loyal CU Buffs fan, counting among his favorite CU sports moments, "sitting 13 rows up on the 40-yard line in Michigan Stadium in 1994 and witnessing, in my humble opinion, the greatest play in the history of college football." |
