For Gary Roubos (ChemEngr '59) and his family, CU is simply a part of their lives. Three generations of the Roubos family have attended CU-Boulder, and Gary and his wife, Terie, recently co-chaired a seven-year fund-raising campaign for the Boulder campus. "We've always had a close connection to the university," Roubos says. He and his wife have made annual gifts to the College of Engineering and Applied Science, as well as the College of Arts and Sciences, every year for quite some time. In 2003, the Earn Learn Program, which allows students to gain valuable work experience while serving a department or program in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, particularly appealed to their interests. "I've always been in favor of programs where students do some work related to their field," Roubos says. "This program also creates an opportunity for some kids to go to college who might not have been able to otherwise." Roubos grew up in Colorado and attended CU-Boulder in the late 1950s on a Boettcher Scholarship. He was president of the student body, commander of the Army ROTC, and outstanding senior graduate of the College of Engineering. He later earned an MBA at the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, and went onto become chief executive officer of Dover Corporation, a large industrial equipment company headquartered in New York. Although retired as CEO, he still serves on Dover's Board of Directors, along with the corporate boards of ProQuest and Omnicom. He also enjoys skiing and playing golf in the Vail Valley, near his home in Edwards. |
