Community Relations & Diversity

BOLD students study together in the college's
Student Success Center. |
We invite you to partner with us in a variety of
programs aimed at building the K-12 pipeline and supporting students from diverse backgrounds in
choosing the engineering profession. By participating in industry
panels, hosting tours at your company, mentoring students in projects,
or providing financial sponsorship, you can offer insight and support to
students in their pursuit of engineering careers. Opportunities to get
involved include:
-
The BOLD Center
The Multicultural Engineering (MEP) and Women in
Engineering (WIEP) programs were established long ago to increase
the recruitment and retention of historically-underrepresented
engineering students. Recognizing the need to further
increase the representation of women and minority students beyond
these programs' efforts, however, the college created a new engineering
leadership position — the Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence —
and formed the BOLD Center (Broadening Opportunity through Leadership and
Diversity) to serve the college’s diversity initiatives at a
higher level. MEP and WIEP were subsumed under the
responsibility of the BOLD Center, which is expanding
responsibilities to take a more inclusive approach to the college becoming a leader
in attracting, preparing, and expanding opportunities for students
historically underrepresented in engineering.

High School
Honors Institute This four-day summer program gives high school juniors and seniors an
opportunity to experience life as an engineering student and learn about
career opportunities as a professional engineer. Students stay in a
campus residence hall, explore the different engineering majors through
hands-on activities, and hear from professional engineers about what
they do on the job.

Integrated
Teaching & Learning Laboratory The ITL Laboratory runs an extensive program of K-12 engineering
outreach, including hands-on workshops for K-12 students and teachers.
ITL co-sponsors the Success Institute with the BOLD Center. Initiatives also include the
development of the national TeachEngineering digital library and the
TEAMS (Tomorrow’s Engineering... creAte. iMagine. Succeed.)
initiative in local public schools.
