"CULTURE WARS IN ROME"
HUEN 3700
Taught in Rome, Italy, this course explores the heterogeneity of the civilizations that have had Rome as their center. Readings as well as the abundant art and architecture of Rome provide illuminating evidence for exploring the ways that "Western Civilization" does not offer a single answer to the most fundamental human questions, but, rather, a rich variety of mutually exclusive choices. Our chief focus is on the differences
between ancient, pagan, aristocratic Rome; medieval and renaissance, Christian, monarchical Rome; and modern, secular, democratic Rome.
