“My excitement for this apprenticeship stems from
knowledge that the College actually uses the information that I compile
for continuous improvement. I
know that after I graduate, the survey will still play an important role
in college’s self-assessment."-Amy
Kramer, Chemical Engineering

“I found my assignment very useful in preparing for the
Fundamentals of Engineering [professional licensing] exam because it
forced me to really think critically about key concepts.”-Candace
Vaughn, Chemical Engineering
“I enjoy getting to spend time working on [this
project] because it allows me to work independently and learn about
areas that aren’t covered in my classes.” -Katelynn Greer,
Aerospace Engineering Sciences
Earn-Learn Apprenticeship Program
The Earn-Learn Apprenticeship Program in the College of
Engineering and Applied Science at CU-Boulder provides financial support
for students while they work part-time within the college. Students work
for a sponsoring department or program in ways that both further their
own education and serve the needs of the sponsoring unit.
-
Examples of available positions include
providing lab or course support, tutoring, preparing educational
materials, and participating in outreach activities with K-12
students. Students interested in research activities should refer to
the discovery learning page, as
Earn-Learn Apprenticeships do not fund research activities. Funding
for the Earn-Learn Apprenticeship Program is provided by both the
sponsoring unit and individual/corporate donors or the dean of the college.
-
Departments are responsible for
screening, interviewing, hiring and supervising their earn-learn
apprentices. The only paperwork that is initially required from
student applicants is a resume and a cover letter expressing
interest in the position. Each department submits their selected
candidates to the Dean’s Office for final review and approval.
-
In addition to performing any work
assigned by their supervisors, earn-learn apprentices are required
to write a thank-you letter to their donor or to the
dean. Individual donors to the earn-learn program enjoy the
satisfaction that comes from knowing that they are helping students
work their way through college, while the college benefits from the
apprentices’ service.
-
Corporate donors have the opportunity to get
to know the earn-learn apprentices they support, providing another
way to develop a direct connection between students and the
companies that hire them.
