"The experiences that earned me the active learning award have helped me discover and nurture my strengths and have unknowingly shaped my career path after college.  Serving as a student government representative opened up a lot of opportunities in working with different people across campus that I believe made a huge difference in my experiences and ultimately helped me receive the job offer I got from Lockheed Martin."

— Jenny Yang, ChemEngr '08

“All these experiences will stay in my memory forever as they were truly remarkable. The independent study showed me just how much I enjoy electronics. The experience led to many more electronic endeavors, like my first job. Tutoring helped me learn to manage my time, and my internship at Kiewit introduced me to the professional world in an enormous way.”

Active Learning Award

Graduating Students Can Earn Active Learning Awards

CU engineering students who enhance their education through a range of active learning experiences will now earn an award for it at graduation. The Active Learning Award recognizes participation in three different kinds of hands-on learning: discovery, service, and professional learning. Students who participate in all three areas will receive an active learning medal at graduation.

The award was created in 2004, to support the college’s strong belief that active learning enriches a student’s education and better prepares them to excel in the world through leadership and service.

Scott Engberg, the first Active Learning Award recipient and CU SAE racing team leader, is now the engineering manager at CHM Industries near Dallas, Texas. Click here to read about his latest project on the Oakland Bay Bridge.

To earn an Active Learning Award, you must have participated in each of the three types of active learning (discovery, service, and professional) and you must submit an application by the posted deadline. Once you believe that you have met the qualifications for an Active Learning Award, there are two options for submitting an application:

1. Print out the Active Learning Award application, complete it, and turn it into the Dean's   Office before the deadline.

 2. Fill out the on-line application before the deadline. We recommend that you print out a copy for your records.

Please do not submit an application before you have participated in each of the three required types of active learning.

Petition Process for Alternate Credit

If you have had an active learning experience (not specifically listed on the application) that you believe should qualify for credit towards discovery, service, or professional learning, please complete a written petition and attach documentation that will support your claim.

We look forward to reviewing your application!
