Message from Terry Mayes, Director of Academic Programs and Assessment

Your college years lay the groundwork for the rest of your life. You are likely to decide on a career direction, make enduring friendships and discover and cultivate lasting interests. Much of this learning will take place within the walls of the classroom, but a great deal will take place outside the more traditional academic experiences. Students who engage in active learning beyond lectures, recitations and labs will grow immeasurably from the experience and have fun at the same time. We provide many opportunities to discover and explore what matters most to you.

Whether you are intrigued by research and considering a career in academia, interested in using engineering to help others, or eager to get a head-start on your career, active learning can help get you where you want to go. So, take some time to surf this site and see how other students have benefited from their active learning experiences. Please feel free to contact me for more information and to discuss how you can make the most of your time at the college. Call me at 303-735-6446, come by the Dean’s Office, or email me at Terry.Mayes@colorado.edu.

ABOUT Active Learning

The College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU-Boulder defines active learning as “enhancing knowledge, skills, and understanding through practical experience." The college’s goal is to provide all students with the opportunity to participate in enrichment experiences and partnerships with individual faculty and professionals in discovery (research), service and professional (internships and co-ops) learning.

What’s in it for me?

  • Acquiring new skills and abilities while exploring your interests;
  • Connecting with faculty, professionals, and other students who share your passion;
  • Taking pleasure in knowing that you are making the college, the community, or the world a better place;
  • Improving your opportunities for graduate school or a career;
  • Validating your career choice and gaining insights about your chosen field;
  • Earning money, course credit, or an Active Learning Award at graduation.

A student checks out the opportunities with INVST Community Studies at the 2007 Active Learning Fair. The fair was held Sept. 19 in the Engineering Center lobby.

Each fall the college hosts an Active Learning Fair to acquaint students with the many opportunities for active learning at the college and across campus.

During the fair, representatives from a dozen organizations will be available to discuss active learning opportunities with engineering students. These include volunteer and paid opportunities as well as for-credit courses that count towards a student's degree program.

For more information about active learning opportunities, contact the active learning program director, Terry Mayes at 303-735-6446, or in the Dean’s Office, ECAD 106.
