What is WIEP? |
How do I "join"?
Students do not have to "join" our program.
The Women in Engineering Program provides services which any female
engineering student may use. Male students are also welcome to
participate in many of our programs, and are welcome to study in our
Resource Center alongside their female classmates.
All female students are automatically placed onto our e-mail
list.

What's the difference between WIEP and SWE?
The Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) works under the
administrative structure of the Deans' Office of the College of
Engineering. Our funding comes from the College, plus corporate and
private donations. Our mission is to foster the success of women in
engineering by recruiting, retaining, and encouraging women engineering
students. To increase retention, we offer academic advising, personal
counseling, and programs such as peer mentoring. WIEP also offers
scholarships to a limited number of incoming first-year and transfer
students. To encourage women to study engineering, we sponsor recruiting
and encouragement programs including Engineering and Science Badge Days
for Brownies/Girl Scouts, and Engineering Career Days for middle school
girls and a separate program for high school women.
The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is a
professional society
that has an active
student section
here at CU-Boulder. The women and men who join SWE pay dues and attend monthly
meetings. In addition to career guidance, SWE is designed for professional
development of its members.

How can I get involved?
The Women in Engineering Program relies on volunteers for many of our programs.
If you would like to become involved, consider volunteering to be a peer
mentor or mentee, or a group leader during an Engineering Career Day for High
School Women. These programs require only a small time commitment, but provide
an invaluable experience for both you and the student(s) you work with!

Are We Alone?
No. There are approximately 45 Women in Engineering Programs throughout the U.S.,
including those at University of Michigan, Arizona State, Penn State, University of
Washington, Purdue, Stevens Institute of Technology, University of California - Davis,
University of Kentucky, and many more. We all belong to WEPAN, The Women in Engineering
Programs and Advocates Network, which provides training and professional support for our programs.
