Getting ready to start your freshman year as an engineering student at the University of Colorado? The MEP’s Summer Bridge program is a great way to start your college career off right!
Summer Bridge is an intensive academic program that helps underrepresented minority students become acclimated to life on campus and the rigors of engineering studies during the summer before their freshman year. Lovingly referred to by many as “engineering boot camp,” this fun and challenging program, available only to incoming MEP students, is proven to increase the academic success of first-year engineering students.
For five weeks starting in mid-June, Summer Bridge students live on campus and attend daily classes in Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Computing, and Humanities that prepare them for the coursework they will see in the fall. Academic Excellence Workshops provide extra homework practice and industry tours to local companies expose students to the real life applications of their chosen field of study.
Equally important as the academic aspects of Summer Bridge are the social connections students make with their classmates. Studies show that students who form friendships and feel part of a community are much more likely to remain in school and graduate than those who do not. Summer Bridge students enter the school year with strong friendships already formed as a result of living, working, and having fun with other MEP freshmen. Trips to the mountains, amusement and water parks, and other Boulder and Denver attractions along with other on-campus activities give participants the chance to relax and develop relationships with each other and with upper class MEP students. By entering the fall semester with these relationships already formed, Summer Bridge participants easily find study groups and can seek help from upper class students.
