K-12 Outreach

The Multicultural Engineering Program is dedicated to creating a strong pipeline that delivers K-12 students to university engineering programs with the skills and knowledge they need to become successful engineers.
MEP captures the interest of K-12 students through a variety of exciting, hands-on programs at area elementary, middle, and high schools and on the CU-Boulder campus. From building a lego “space ship” that protects an egg when it is dropped from a second story bridge to constructing a Mars rover remote control car, students gain exposure to science, engineering, and technology concepts and begin thinking about their future careers as college students and engineers.

OUTREACH PROGRAMS SPONSORED BY MEP

Success Institute This week-long summer workshop for minority, female, and first-generation students entering grades 9-12 is packed with hands-on engineering activities that expose kids to real life applications of engineering, math, and science. Students learn about the wide range of engineering careers and make new friends through this impactful summer opportunity.
Campus Visits MEP invites individual students and school groups to visit the CU-Boulder campus, where they can meet our friendly, helpful staff, enjoy a campus tour, check out a college engineering class, and, in some cases, participate in engineering projects and activities. To schedule a visit, contact our Acting Director Anthea Johnson-Rooen at anthea.johnson@colorado.edu or (303) 492-4276.
MESA Working in partnership with the Colorado Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Program (MESA), MEP students visit area middle and high schools to help teachers facilitate dynamic after school math and science clubs. College student mentors instruct MESA members in the construction of projects including balsa wood bridges, mousetrap cars, and egg drop containers while helping them to understand that they, too, have the potential to become students in CU’s College of Engineering and Applied Science.
Colorado MESA
Fall Fling
This two-day event brings 200 high school students from about 20 Colorado high schools to the CU campus to compete in two separate engineering team competitions: a boat-building challenge and associated race held in the CU Recreation Center swimming pool and an annual engineering project competition that serves as the National Competition qualifier.
