Who does MEP Serve?
|
HISTORY AND BACKGROUNDThe MEP was established in 1973 to help increase the number of traditionally underrepresented students that enroll and graduate from the University of Colorado at Boulder College of Engineering and Applied Science. At the time, only 6 underrepresented students of color were enrolled in the college. Since its inception, the MEP has functioned as a collaborative venture between the federal government, industry, and the university. The MEP currently provides services to approximately 200 students, 80% of whom have underrepresented minority backgrounds. The remaining 20% include students who are Asian and white, 50% of them being first-generation college students. Thanks to this program’s efforts, CU currently ranks sixth in the nation for its minority engineering graduation rate of 66%, compared to a national average rate of just 39% (National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, Inc.). |
