Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs)

Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs) are small study sessions conducted for MEP freshmen enrolled in Calculus I, II, and III; Differential Equations; Chemistry I; and Physics I. MEP freshmen enrolled in these “gateway” classes are required to participate in these AEWs, which are designed to supplement regular class work and give students an edge during their first year as engineering students.
Under the direction of upper-class and graduate student facilitators, MEP students work together in small groups to practice the concepts they are learning in their college courses. AEWs meet Monday through Thursday for an hour and a half each evening to work on homework problems, challenging problems that have yet to be presented in class, and timely practice exams. AEWs help students to become familiar with the material they are learning in class and to feel comfortable solving various problems.
AEWs challenge students to work together and develop confidence in their ability to solve problems. The results are impressive. Studies show that MEP students who regularly participate in the AEWs consistently achieve significantly higher grades than non-participants.
